What is the standard tip in the U.S. in 2026?
The U.S. standard is 18–20% for sit-down restaurant service, with 20% as the most common default for good service. Delivery and rideshare have converged at 15–20% with a $2–$5 minimum.
Do you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Tax is not work performed by the server, so it isn't part of what's tipped on. Tipping on the post-tax total is generous but not required.
How do you split a tip among several people?
Calculate the total including the tip, then divide by the number of people. The calculator above does this automatically — set the people stepper, and turn on "Round per-person up" for clean amounts.
Is a 15% tip still acceptable?
15% is on the low end of acceptable for sit-down service in 2026. Most U.S. diners tip 18–20% for standard service and 25%+ for exceptional service.
Does the "service charge" on my bill replace the tip?
